Know Your Limits

It saddens me when people do things to numb their sorrows. Life isn't good, life isn't what you want it to be. So, you drink. Do you think that you're old enough to be doing that?

We look down on people who are trying to find themselves, because we all assume that the other should have created their identity by now. However innate one's inner personality is, identity is always changing. Especially in college. Finding out where you belong, where you feel comfortable, is something that everyone goes through. Those who claim that they fit in anywhere or don't care about belonging are denying their nature. It is in human nature to want to belong, to group up. But at what price?

It is only when you are at your best can you find out who you really are. Drugs, alcohol, other forms of pain numbing? Those aren't going to get you where you want to go. The only thing I can think about when people tell me what they did, who they did, how much they did, how awesome what they did was... is, what are you hiding? What responsibility are you escaping? What sorrows are you masking with your image of freedom and joy and devil-may-care-ness?

Consuming a substance that alters your state of mind is an escape. We all do it; there's nothing wrong with that. But when you tell the whole world, when you brag about it, when it becomes a habit... there's something going on. And you don't want to deal with it. The longer you hide from yourself, the longer it will take for you to get to a place that allows you to love who you are.
