what is the meaning of halloween? or rather, what is the original meaning of halloween? when we were younger, halloween meant dressing up in costumes and going trick-or-treating to get treats (ie. candy) from neighbors, assuming you went trick-or-treating in your neighborhood. sometimes, things didn't fare so well as some people were malintentioned enough to lace candies with poison to hurt children. there was some sort of article published back in middle school about some people who were filling candies with poison and killing/disabling kids. overall though, halloween was a fun time.
skip to modern day, when all of us are grown up. what is halloween now? an excuse to dress up (for girls and sometimes guys) as sluttily as possible, to extort as much skin as possible. what is the reason for this change in meaning? since when did halloween "in girl world" change? why did it change? is it because our values changed? why do we dress sluttily? do we do it for empowerment, or do we do it to impress and get the attention of guys? or is it a different reason altogether? i remember one year in college i dressed up as the queen of hearts; i bought a rather risque costume, wore the dress and heels and went to a halloween party (read: booze party in costume). why did i? mostly because i thought it would get attention, and also because my ex-boyfriend wanted me to. what other reason is there?
on an offshoot, beauty and the beast may be the best disney movie ever created.
